Brick-Stainable: An international brick design competition
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and in this case, Think Brick Australia is sincerely flattered, but even more excited!
Potomac Valley Brick, A brick company from the East Coast of the United States, recently announced an international design competition to rethink brick. In the same vein as Think Brick Australia’s About Face Awards, Brick-Stainable has been created to advance thinking in integrated solutions for buildings using clay masonry as the primary material.
The Design brief is a net-zero energy guest house for international dignitaries visiting Washington DC and includes 4 x 2 Bedroom/2 Bathroom suites, 8 x 1 Bedroom/1 Bathroom suites, conference rooms, breakout rooms and many other things that international dignitaries would require during their visit to Washington DC.
Given the Washington Climate is both hot and cold (much colder than most of Australia’s cities, yet just as warm as Melbourne or Sydney during the summer!), this is a very important project to help advance thinking on how we can use clay bricks to provide efficient and sustainable homes.
More information is available from the Brick-Stainable website, but look back here for the winners when they are announced during December 2009.
